Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They improve the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using an expert or higher salvage kits to recover upgrades from the items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than before.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. For example, some upgrades will give the armor a certain amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item level upgrade can get will be indicated by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, as shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees in order to be used. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire based on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is with Iron Ore, which can be obtained through exploring the surroundings and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvements in stats and are worth the investment.

A piece of armor upgraded to max upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense capabilities however, the user must be aware that putting on weight will dramatically reduce its speed and agility. Therefore, it is generally not recommended to upgrade most armor pieces above +9, since the added defense is typically not worth the additional weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle or the damage that shotgun shells cause. Some weapons also have special enhancements that enhance their intrinsic capabilities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. These are obtained through either doing side quests, or taking out a certain number of bosses or monsters, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade the weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [ArmorBoboko. Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars required to complete it. The cost of upgrading will be less if you have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets changed a little. Previously you could search for an Upgrade Bench and pay a set number of Bars to upgrade your weapon or equipment to a higher level of rarity. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

This is still possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. It is better to purchase gear with low upgrade levels but with high base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a better chance of giving you the most prestigious tier of benefits and blessings.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they use most frequently to allow them to progress faster. In addition to these players, they should think about upgrading the weapons favored by their teammates to increase their power as well. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to increase the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in weapons and armor. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, where you combine a gemstone and a number of specific ingredients at a table for jewelry. The higher the quality of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a gem can be improved at the Jeweler, with stages that vary from Crude to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ depending on the tier the jewel is in when it's slotted into jewelry, weapons, or gear.

All tiers of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get the privilege of having them. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. However, you can only replace a jewel in an item of equipment once.

It is normal to use more jewelry to enhance the appearance of. The jewels also improve performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your weapons and shields. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped freely, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and Scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis, are not swappable, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are items of equipment that provide an array of small but useful advantages to your hero. They are available in the starter area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained from vendors as well as through doing road interaction. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in movement speed and the ability to evade. The player can then acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be used in any type of equipment, however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also compensate for the lack of a strong slot in the talent tree or team which are usually filled by the hero's best stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing soon, followed by any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item level upgrade to be upgraded. This is true especially if you are looking to upgrade multiple stats on an item. It is Best item upgrader to upgrade just one crucial stat instead of two subpar ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red trinket at the start of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand, will choose either a pink or green ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's map control abilities.

In addition to the items listed above, players will also discover other trinkets in form trophies and rewards throughout the game. They can be earned by completing certain milestones within the story, like the main quest of a chapter or destroying a boss. You can check them out by selecting the achievement from the reward section of the hero's menu.
