The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be incorporated into trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or extra impact when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot gathered by enemies or gotten from chests and missions. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.

To upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the player has to select it and then click on the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.

There are three kinds of universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be placed on any type of equipment. In the case of upgrades to gather tools when a player swaps one glyph with another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions.
